Thread Lift Treatment

A thread lift, also called a lunchtime lift, is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure that helps reverse aging signs by lifting and tightening the skin on your face and neck. This technique uses medical-grade threads inserted into the facial or neck skin. These threads have small barbs or cones that catch onto the skin tissue.

When pulled toward the insertion point, these threads lift the skin and stimulate collagen production, making the skin firmer and more youthful.

A thread lift is a relatively quick procedure that may provide noticeable improvements. Like any medical procedure, it can have potential complications. However, most of these complications can be prevented if you get this treatment from a skilled practitioner.

What Types Of Threads Are Used In Thread Lifting?

The threads used in thread lifting treatment can be classified as rejuvenation threads and lifting threads. Let’s discuss both of these threads briefly below.

  • Rejuvenation threads: These threads aim to stimulate collagen production under the skin and, hence, leave a rejuvenation effect. The rejuvenation effect continues to improve even after the threads are dissolved. These threads are usually made from materials like PDO (Polydioxanone), PLLA (Poly-L-Lactic Acid), or PCL (Polycaprolactone).
  • Lifting thread: These threads contain cones, cogs, or barbs that engage the subdermal tissue. So when pulled up, these threads lift the skin and produce a tightening effect. Lifting threads can be made from absorbable or non-absorbable materials. Examples of these threads include Aptos and Silhouette Soft® threads.
It is important to note that some threads, like those made from PLGA (Polyglycolic Acid), are designed to both lift the skin and stimulate rejuvenation.

Treatment areas

A thread lift can effectively reduce aging signs in the following areas:

  • Eyebrows
  • Cheeks
  • Jaws
  • Neck
  • Under Eye Area

Who is a Good Candidate?

A good candidate for a thread lift is a person with mild to moderate sagginess in facial areas like brows, cheeks, jowls, and upper neck. This procedure is ideal if you only want to lift your facial skin a little without having a surgical facelift. While it can be performed on people of any age, a thread lift is considered more suitable for individuals in their late 40s or early 50s who want to look younger than their actual age.

What Are The Benefits Of A Thread Lift?

The benefits of a thread lift include the following:

  • This procedure is safe for most adults due to its lower risk than several facial skin tightening procedures.
  • Various kinds of threads used in thread lifting help stimulate collagen production besides lifting the skin.
  • It is a minimally invasive procedure that leads to quicker recovery, allowing you to return to work or other routine activities as soon as you leave the clinic.
  • A thread lift is somewhat reversible, provided that non-dissolvable threads are used. If you are unhappy with the results, you can ask your doctor to remove the threads. However, removal does not guarantee a full reversal to the pre-procedure state. Tissue healing and collagen production that have begun around the threads might not be fully reversible.

How Do I Prepare For A Thread Lift?

To help you prepare for a thread lift, your practitioner may ask you to:

  • Get physically examined as well as medically evaluated.
  • Take certain medicines instead of your current medications.
  • Stop smoking at least a week ahead of the procedure.
  • Avoid NSAIDs, aspirin, and herbal supplements to reduce the risk of bleeding.

How Is A Thread Lift Performed?

The standard steps of a thread lift may include the following:

  • Your dermatologist or surgeon will clean and disinfect the treatment area and apply a local anesthetic.
  • They will make a small incision with a needle and insert a cannula with a thread attached to it. The cannula will be driven to the desired position under the skin.
  • Once the cannula reaches the target place, the surgeon will anchor the thread and pull it towards the insertion point to lift the skin. After that, the cannula will be pulled out.
  • The thread sticking out of the skin will be cut in the last step.
  • A thread lift procedure may last 30-45 minutes. You can leave the clinic and resume your daily routine shortly after the procedure. However, you may be asked to wait two weeks before starting strenuous physical activities.

What Are The Results Of A Thread Lift?

The initial results of a thread lift generally appear immediately after the treatment. You will notice a tauter, more lifted skin appearance.

The thread lift results continue to improve as the treated areas produce more collagen. The final results occur 3-4 weeks after the treatment. These results may last anywhere from one to three years.

What Are The Side Effects Of A Thread Lift?

Since a thread lift is a minimally invasive and generally safe procedure, it rarely leads to severe side effects. However, some complications may still occur after the treatment. They may include:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Infection
  • The thread bulging out of the insertion point
  • Inability to open the mouth easily (rare side-effect)
  • Swelling and bruising in the treatment region
  • Persisting pain
  • Unsatisfactory results

Is a thread lift painful?

A thread lift is generally performed under local anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. However, you may experience some discomfort once the effects of anesthesia wear off. You can take over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers to manage that discomfort.

Can I eat before a thread lift?

While there are no pre-established dietary restrictions to follow before a thread lift, discussing your food intake with your doctor is advisable.

What should I do after a thread lift?

Your doctor may advise you not to touch, wet, or wash your treated area for about 12 hours after a thread lift. You will also be asked to avoid scrubbing and massaging the area for about three weeks.
