Ear Surgery in Dubai – Otoplasty

A beautiful face can be negatively affected by visibly imperfect ears. The perfect ears are neither too big nor too small. Some individuals may have ear shapes that they feel detract from their appearance, which can be addressed with otoplasty. Ear surgery will help you get the desired results.

What is Ear Surgery?

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty or auriculoplasty, can greatly improve the ear shape, proportion, and placement. It can correct congenital ear structure anomalies that become more apparent with age, helping you achieve your desired ear shape. It also serves as corrective surgery for deformities or irregularities caused by trauma.

Are You a Candidate?

Otoplasty in Dubai may be a perfect option for you if:

  • You are unhappy with the appearance of your ears.
  • Your ears are sticking out too far from your head.
  • Your ears appear disproportionately large or small compared to your head size.
  • You are seeking correction for ear shape affected by injury or trauma.
  • You should be in good overall health, as determined by a medical evaluation.
  • You understand the potential outcomes of the surgery and have realistic expectations, as discussed with your surgeon.

Ear Surgery Benefits

There are many psychological as well as aesthetic benefits of otoplasty. Some of the most common benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • It greatly improves your aesthetic appearance by improving the shape, size, and position of your ears.
  • It is a safe procedure and minimal side effects are associated with it.
  • The procedure is suitable for correcting a wide variety of small imperfections.
  • It is suitable for children as well.
  • It requires minimum downtime and causes minimal scarring.
  • It may improve your quality of life by enhancing confidence and self-esteem related to your appearance.
  • It gives natural-looking results.

Ear Surgery Goals

The goal of ear surgery is to fix the shape and position of ears for a harmonious appearance. It brings the following improvements;

  • Aims to reduce the size of overly large ears, creating a more balanced appearance with the rest of the facial features.
  • May involve techniques to enhance the appearance of smaller ears, often through reshaping or adding structure.
  • Aims to reposition protruding ears closer to the head for a more balanced look.
  • Aims to improve ear symmetry, making both ears more uniform in appearance.

Pre-op Preparation

During your pre-op visit for otoplasty, our plastic surgeon will examine you physically to ensure your candidacy for surgery. He will take your detailed medical history and give thorough pre-operative instructions. Some of the most common instructions are:

  • Consult with your surgeon about discontinuing aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain herbal supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding, as this may vary based on individual health conditions.
  • Maintain adequate hydration leading up to the surgery, as advised by your surgeon.
  • Adjust your current medications according to specific instructions provided by your surgeon.
  • Follow dietary restrictions or adjustments as advised by your surgeon prior to surgery.

How is Ear Surgery Performed?

The latest Otoplasty procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete. Highly customized surgery may also take 2 to 3 hours. Following is the step by step description of the surgery.

  • Anesthesia is administered based on the extent of the surgery and patient’s health. Either general or local anesthesia may be used, as determined by the surgeon.
  • Then the surgeon will make incisions at various sites depending on the alterations required. For example;
    • Incisions may be hidden in the natural folds of the ear to minimize visible scarring.
    • For correcting protruding ears, incisions may be made behind the ears to allow for reshaping or removal of cartilage.
  • Subsequently, the surgeon makes the necessary alterations, such as reshaping the cartilage or adjusting the ear position.
  • Incisions are meticulously closed using sutures to minimize scarring and promote healing.

Post-op Care

Below given are some common instructions that nearly every patient needs to follow.

  • Take all prescribed medications as directed to manage pain and reduce the risk of infection.
  • Use ice packs to reduce swelling and discomfort, as directed by your surgeon, to avoid any complications.
  • During the first week of recovery, ensure adequate rest but engage in light walking as soon as it’s safe to promote circulation and aid healing.
  • Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for a specified period, usually a few weeks, as advised by your surgeon.
  • Keep your head elevated while resting or sleeping.
  • Avoid putting pressure on the treated ear(s) while sleeping or resting; use a soft pillow and try to sleep on the opposite side if possible.

Ear Surgery Recovery

Otoplasty recovery differs from person to person but you can expect your recovery period to be like this:

  • Plan to rest at home for at least a week post-surgery, or as recommended by your surgeon, to ensure proper healing.
  • Your head will be bandaged to protect the surgical site and support healing; follow instructions on how to care for it.
  • You will have to wear the bandage for at least three days.
  • If your stitches need to be removed, your surgeon will do so one week after the surgery.
  • Scars are expected but will likely fade over time.
  • Though the recovery period is unique for every patient, you can expect to return to your work and start light activities one week after the surgery.
  • While initial improvements may be noticeable, final results typically take several weeks to months as swelling subsides and the ears heal fully.
