A hair transplant is a procedure in which hairs are harvested from one part and are planted in the desired location. The procedure is one of the most famous cosmetic procedures due to the advantages that it offers. The area from where hairs are harvested is known as the Donor site which is usually the back of the scalp and the area where hairs are transplanted is known as the Recipient site.
The procedure is performed on the people who lose a significant amount of hair or have a bald area on the head where hair should be transplanted. Hair loss or balding usually happens due to genetic problems or hormones factors.
Types of Hair Transplant Treatment
There are two types of hair transplant procedures, Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Their plantation procedure is the same however there is a great difference between their harvesting techniques.
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)
FUT is an old and the first technique to be used for hair transplants. In this technique, a suitable piece of skin is cut from the back of the scalp which is then used for the hair transplant. The wound is then closed and the harvested piece of skin is then divided into small parts till each part only contains few hairs. These hairs are then transplanted into the desired location.
More hair can be grafted through this procedure in a single session when compared to FUE. The procedure works faster and can yield better results in only one session. Mostly only one session is needed for complete results. The main downside of this procedure is the large scar created on the back of the scalp.
Advantages of FUT
- A large number of follicles can be transplanted in a single session.
- It is less costly.
- The technique has a better yield of the hair follicles.
- Hair can be restored in less time by this procedure.
- The survival rate of transplanted hair is higher.
Follicle Unit Extraction (FUE)
FUE is the latest hair transplant technique and it is more advanced as compared to FUT. The basic principle of this technique is the same as FUT. The difference between the two techniques lies in the harvesting of hairs. In this technique, hairs are extracted through a special instrument which extracts follicle units from the donor area. After extraction, these follicles are implanted as hairlines in the desired location decided by the patient.
The procedure is less painful as compared to FUT technique. It provides increased hair destiny and reduces the possibility of scarring. The procedure is useful in pattern baldness also known as androgenic alopecia.
Advantages of FUE
- It has less downtime of healing.
- The scar and scratches produced are invisible.
- The risk of complications is pretty low.
- It gives a natural-looking hairline to a person.
- The discomfort after the procedure is less as compared to FUT.
Whether you choose FUE or FUT, both techniques will give you the desired results. But you should remember the advantages and disadvantages associated with the procedures. Depending on these pros and cons, you should consider having a hair transplant procedure. However, never choose a technique on your own. Always consult a hair transplant surgeon before getting the procedure. At Dubai Cosmetic Surgery, you will find expert surgeons who will examine your scalp condition and will suggest you the best-suited transplant technique.
