We are always reading about how a plastic or cosmetic procedure in Dubai went wrong for someone, which leaves us hoping that the same does not happen to us. Well, hopes are great, but there is no guarantee that you might not end up on the TV show ‘Botched’, unless you follow certain steps, which we are about to lay down for you.
There are patients who choose to go the cheap way, instead of paying market price for a certain plastic or cosmetic procedure. Now, we are not saying that it is bad to be cheap or anything, but sometimes when the deal is too good you better think twice otherwise you will end up paying more in the long run. Apparently, paying much less for procedures is the leading cause of botched procedures worldwide, also done by unqualified practitioners, which cannot only be life threatening, but can leave you paying more to have the procedure corrected or reversed in the long run.
Other than paying a tenth of what a procedure costs, how else can you avoid botched cosmetic/plastic surgery procedures in Dubai?
If the deal is too good think twice: Well, this should be your attitude towards everything, not unless it is the annual Dubai Shopping Festival. If a ‘specialist’ tells you he can do a certain procedure at a very cheap price, it will be time to run a mile and never look back. Although plastic and cosmetic surgery clinics do not have the same standard price for every treatment, there is at least a standard range, which should give you an idea of how much money you will have to part with if you want to live the beautiful lifestyle.
Choose accredited facilities: A while back there was an article in one of the UAE newspapers about a ‘plastic surgeon’ who was doing procedures on his kitchen table. Of course he was arrested and everything, before choosing a plastic surgeon to work on you, you should first make sure that the facility the doctor/specialist is talking about is credible. If you have an eye on a certain cosmetic surgery clinic, and you are not sure about it, it would be a good idea to give the good folks over at Dubai Health Authority (DHA) a call and verify the venue.
Board Certification: All plastic and cosmetic surgeons know the importance of being board certified, that’s why they work hard to get them. Before deciding on a certain surgeon, make sure he is board certified. If you are not sure how to check out, simply go to the board certifications website and type in the surgeon’s name. For instance, if it’s in the UAE, you can go to The Emirates Plastic Surgery Society website and click on the members menu. If the plastic surgeon is not there and yet he claims there, that’s a red flag already. Move on to the next surgeon.
Listen to your gut feeling: If you have had your consultations with the same surgeon and nothing appears to be wrong, but at the back of your mind you feel a nagging that is not comfortable, then it’s time you chose another plastic surgeon. It is always better to be safe than sorry, or later wish that you had listened to your gut.
Disciplinary Actions: If possible, you should check if your plastic surgeon to-be has had any disciplinary actions leveled against him, and the reason for this. If there is a good reason why this happened and you can’t trust this surgeon, it’s time to move on to another one.
