The popularity of laser treatment in the skincare industry is growing by the day thanks to its versatility and quick results. The treatments usually last anywhere between 5 to 30 minutes depending on the area and what is being treated. Laser treatments are a favourite among many because of it has very little to no downtime.
The word laser stands for ‘Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation’. It targets light energy on a specific area thus obliterating something specific like pigment on the skin without causing damage to the surrounding muscles. By doing this it jump starts the body’s healing process by stimulating nearby cells in the targeted region to produce more collagen and other new cells. This results in the skin looking much better and nicer than before.
Lasers are used to solve certain common skin problems such as;
These are treated using the Fractional nonablative lasers and the traditional Q-Switched Ruby. The usually target excessive melanin which causes spots. Dramatic difference is seen just after the first treatment on the face. For the rest of the body it takes about two to three treatments for the results to start being visible. This is because these areas scar easily and they cannot be treated aggressively.
The results are often permanent but touch-ups may be needed as the areas may darken due to sun exposure. The downtime is about a week as that’s the time the scabs form and fall off.
The Fractional ablative or the nonablative resurfacing lasers are used to improve the appearance of acne scarring by upto 75%. This depends on the depth of the scar and several sessions, usually upto 5 sessions are needed for optimal results.
Sometimes for much better results the traditional laser the Erbium or the CO2 is used. The downtime is usually a few days sunburn pink.
Traditional lasers such as the Erbium or the CO2 are used for dramatic results for the most stubborn wrinkles. The lasers work by heating the water in the skin till the surface skin is vaporized thus stimulating the production of new collagen. However the price of the downtime is pretty high and serious wound care is needed.
It is because of these reasons that laser surgeons recommend the fractional ablative lasers or the nonablative lasers for fine lines and wrinkle treatment. This is because these lasers do not leave the skin raw. They however need several sessions which are spaced about a month apart to achieve what traditional lasers achieve in one session.
Lasers for vascular marks target and get rid of the haemoglobin in blood cells which destroys the blood cells. Smaller blood vessels and capillaries usually respond to one treatment. Other conditions such as larger veins, rosacea and port-wine stains need several treatment sessions. Touch-ups are required yearly as the results are not permanent.
Laser tattoo removal depends on the color, the depth and how old the tattoo is so as to know which kind of laser is to be used. For green and blue ink the PicoSure laser is used. For a 3 inch tattoo a 15 minute session would do.
Always make sure to do your research on lasers before going in for a laser session.
