We are always reading about how a plastic or cosmetic procedure went wrong for someone, which leaves us hoping that the same does not happen to us. Well, hopes are great, but there is no guarantee that you might not end up on the TV show ‘Botched’ unless you follow certain steps, which we are about to lay down for you.
There are patients who choose to go the cheap way, instead of paying the market price for a certain plastic or cosmetic procedure. Now, we are not saying that it is bad to find cheaper treatment or anything, but sometimes when the deal is too good to be true, you better think twice otherwise you will end up paying more in the long run. Apparently, paying much less for the procedure is the leading cause of botched procedures worldwide. Also, if the treatment is done by unqualified practitioners, it will not only be life threatening but can leave you paying more to have the procedure corrected or reversed in the long run.
Here, we will discuss all the ways through which you can avoid botched cosmetic surgery procedures.
If the deal is too good to think twice
Well, this should be your attitude towards everything, except for the annual Dubai Shopping Festival. If a ‘specialist’ tells you he can do a certain procedure at a very cheap price, it is the time to run a mile and never look back. Although plastic and cosmetic surgery clinics do not have the same standard price for every treatment, there is at least a standard range, which should give you an idea of how much money you will have to part with if you want to live a confident life.
Choose accredited facilities
A while back there was an article in one of the UAE newspapers about a ‘plastic surgeon’ who was doing procedures on his kitchen table. Of course, he was arrested later. Therefore, before choosing a plastic surgeon to work on you, you should first make sure that the facility, the doctor/specialist is talking about is credible. If you have an eye on a certain cosmetic surgery clinic, and you are not sure about it, it would be a good idea to call the good folks at Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and verify the venue.
All plastic and cosmetic surgeons know the importance of being board-certified, that’s why they work hard to get them. Before deciding on a certain surgeon, make sure he is board-certified. If you are not sure how to check out, simply go to the board certifications website and type in the surgeon’s name. For instance, if it’s in the UAE, you can go to The Emirates Plastic Surgery Society website and click on the member’s menu. If the plastic surgeon is not there and yet he claims to be board-certified, that’s a red flag already. Move on to the next surgeon.
Listen to your gut feeling
If you are having your consultations with a surgeon and nothing appears to be wrong, but at the back of your mind you feel a nagging that is not comfortable, then it’s time you chose another plastic surgeon. It is always better to be safe than sorry, or later wish that you had listened to your gut feeling.
If possible, you should check if your plastic surgeon to-be has had any disciplinary actions leveled against him, and its reason. If there is a good reason and you can’t trust this surgeon, it’s time to move on to another one.
