Hula hoops could be seen as child’s play or something that was done in the 60s and 70s, but those keen on staying fit and enjoying themselves while at it are moving towards the larger and heavier versions of the toy. In one study, a team from the University of Wisconsin recruited volunteers to participate in a test on the effectiveness of hula hooping. They found that hooping for 30 minutes burns as many calories as step aerobics and brisk walking. On average, you can burn seven calories per minute for a total of about 210 calories during a 30-minute hooping workout or more.

Before making the decision to include a hula hoop to your workout routine, it is important to consult your physician beforehand – as is important with any exercise. Secondly, choose a hula hoop that is made specifically for adults; wider and a bit heavier than the ones you get in toyshops.

Weighted hoops, researchers say, may actually be easier to use because they rotate more slowly around the body. As for the size, you will know you have the right one if it reaches between your waist and your chest while standing up.

For those who might find it hard to rotate, you can start by placing one foot in front of the other, then spinning it counter clockwise if you are right-handed and vice-versa if you are left-handed. Otherwise you can try the direction that is more comfortable for you.

For a beginner, the hoop might fall down a number of times before you get the hang of it. Afterwards it is will be easier to maintain the momentum for a certain period of time. It is advisable not to use a hula hoop for more than three minutes at a time because you might end up having a bruised midriff – especially if it is your first time. According to research, this form of cardio burns approximately 400-600 calories per hour; depending on your momentum. It is a great exercise for toning your stomach, arms, glutes and thighs as well as strengthening the core. By moving some of the biggest muscles of your body to keep the hula hoop rotating, you end up burning fat as well as relieving some of the strains of everyday life. This is because it can be very relaxing when you put your mind to it and you end up looking at the exercise as a fun way to work out and less of a chore.

For people who cannot perform any hardcore aerobic activities due to health reasons, hula hooping is recommended for them. They can burn just as many calories as they would if they were running on a treadmill. But as mentioned above, please consult your doctor before embarking on this venture.
