The nose is an important part of the face that can make or mar the whole facial appearance. If your nose is well-proportioned and well-shaped then it will add to your charm. A nose job or nose surgery is technically known as Rhinoplasty. It is an ideal procedure to improve the appearance of the nose by making changes in its shape and size. Many people are unhappy with their noses and undergo Rhinoplasty to get the desired appearance of the nose. This procedure has become quite popular these days.
Nose surgery can also be performed for medical reasons, such as;
- correction of breathing problems
- disfigurement caused by a birth defect or some trauma
However, there can be several other reasons for undergoing Rhinoplasty. So, whatever the reason, you should discuss everything associated with the treatment with your surgeon before the procedure. The reasons for pre-procedure consultation are:
- Rhinoplasty is an invasive and difficult procedure.
- It is the only procedure that has a high rate of revision surgery.
There are several important factors associated with the procedure. However, here we will discuss one of the most important ones that are the recovery time after Rhinoplasty.
Recovery after Rhinoplasty
If we talk about recovery time after Rhinoplasty, it varies from patient to patient depending on certain factors like:
- The level and severity of treatment
- The technique used for the procedure
Just after the surgery, you will have a nasal splint on your nose for nearly one week. The purpose of the splint is to keep your nose stable. Some surgeons use nasal packing that helps reducing swelling. Moreover, the nose undergoes major changes in the first 2 to 12 weeks of the recovery period. The nose changes slowly with the gradual dissipation of swelling. When the nasal splint is removed after a week, the nose will look swollen. By the end of the second week, some swelling will subside but it will remain swollen and puffy for several months. Most of the swelling subsides in 3 to 4 months. However, it may take about a year for the final shape of the nose to show.
Side Effects of Nose Surgery
The most common side effects associated with the procedure are:
Generally, the surgeon guides on how to reduce these symptoms. However, in most cases, applying cold compresses on sore areas provides comfort. Keeping the head elevated also adds to comfort. Moreover, swelling and bruising are normal during the Rhinoplasty recovery period. While these side effects can be minimized, for the time being, swelling takes longer to subside completely. If we talk about bruising, it will be prominent for a few weeks after surgery but resolves over time. Both the symptoms depend on several factors like the technique used and the patient’s healing capabilities.
How to make recovery comfortable?
The recovery can also cause pain and discomfort in patients. However, it can be eased by following certain steps:
- The prescriptions and instructions from the surgeon should be religiously followed.
- Avoid strenuous activities and exercise for three to six weeks after surgery.
- Return to work and social activities two to three weeks after surgery.
However, complete recovery will take some time and once you recover completely, only then you will see the final results.
