Though it is not given much importance, yet nose is an important part of face that can make or mar the whole facial appearance. If your nose is well-proportioned and well-shaped then it will make you look more attractive and beautiful. A nose job or nose surgery – technically known as rhinoplasty – is an ideal procedure to improve the appearance of nose by making changes in its shape and size. There are number of people who are unhappy with their nose and make rhinoplasty their option to get desired appearance of nose. This procedure has become quite popular these days.
Nose surgery can also be performed for medical reasons like correction of breathing problems and disfigurement caused by birth defect or some trauma. Whatever the reason for considering nose surgery is, the important thing is that you should discuss each and everything associated with the procedure with your surgeon before going under the knife. This is because rhinoplasty is the most difficult procedure and same is the reason that it is the only procedure that has high rate of revision surgery. Though there are number of important things associated with the procedure, here we will discuss about one of the most important that is recovery time after rhinoplasty.
If we talk about recovery time after rhinoplasty, it varies from patient to patient depending on certain factors like extent of procedure and technique used for the procedure. You can bring ease and comfort in the pain and discomfort caused by procedure in recovery period by following the prescriptions and instructions from your surgeon. You should avoid strenuous activities and exercise for three to six weeks after surgery. You can return to your work and social activities within two to three weeks after surgery. However, complete recovery will take some time and after you recover completely, you will get the final results.
Just after the surgery, you will have nasal splint on your nose for nearly one week. The purpose of splint is to keep your nose stable. Some surgeons use nasal packing that helps reducing swelling. Other things that you may experience during recovery period are given below.
The most common side effects associated with the procedure are swelling and bruising. Your surgeon will guide you how to reduce these symptoms but generally, applying cold compresses on sore areas provides comfort. Keeping your head elevated also adds to comfort.
Swelling takes long to subside completely and nose undergoes major changes in first 2 to 12 weeks of recovery period. Nose changes slowly with gradual dissipation of swelling. When the nasal splint is removed after a week, your nose will look swollen. At the end of second week, some of the swelling will subside but it will still be swollen and puffy for several months. Most of the swelling goes in 3 to 4 months but the final shape of nose may take a year to show. If we talk about bruising, it will be very prominent for few weeks after surgery but will resolve with the passage of time.
Swelling and bruising are normal part of rhinoplasty recovery and both the symptoms depend on several factors like technique used and patient’s healing capabilities.
