Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is opted for altering the shape of the nose. It offers great help to the people who want to change the shape of their nose either for medical reasons or aesthetic reasons. There are two types of rhinoplasty techniques. Closed rhinoplasty and Open rhinoplasty. People usually get confused and cant differentiate between the two techniques. Therefore, we will explain the difference below.
Open rhinoplasty is also called external rhinoplasty. The basic principle of both the procedures is same. The difference lies in the incision made to perform the procedure. This type of rhinoplasty uses bridging incision also known as trans-columellar incision to connect the incision of left and right nostril. Making this type of incision allows the surgeon to fold the nostrils to a new shape giving more excess to the surgeon to perform more detailed surgery due to increased visibility provided by underlying nostril structure.
Due to the incision, more access is given to the cartilage of nose which improves the accuracy while the surgeon reshapes the nose. This gives the surgeon a freedom to give the desired contours to your nose which wouldn’t be possible with close technique. This type of treatment decreases the chance of cartilage distortion and helps in correcting the tip of your nose according to the desired shape by utilizing grafting or suturing technique.
It is also known as Endonasal rhinoplasty. In this type of procedure, the surgeon will make a parallel incision which will encircle half of the nostril linings. It allows access to the underlying bone structure. The biggest advantage that this procedure offers, is the incision which is made inside the nostril thus making it invisible. This treatment is less invasive as compared to open rhinoplasty and has shorter recovery time.
In this type of treatment, the incision of left and right nostril remains disconnected which makes the re-positioning of nasal skin difficult. The entire operation is conducted through a narrow opening which limits the access and visibility of the inner nose. Due to the lower accessibility, skin will be stretched to reach the inner parts of the nose which increases the chance of cartilage distortion. It also limits the correct reshaping of the nose tip.
The type of rhinoplasty chosen will depend upon the natural anatomy as well as the results that the person expects from the procedure. A Close rhinoplasty is a good option because it creates scar inside the nose which is not visible. However, if you need more accurate results then open rhinoplasty is the best option for you because it will allow better accessibility and freedom to the surgeon. Most of the effective techniques used in the procedure can only be performed through open rhinoplasty.
