The lips are one of the most mobile and expressive part of face. Full luscious lips make your smile striking resulting in more beautiful and youthful facial appearance. However, as we age, they begin to lose their volume and shape. Lip augmentation is the cosmetic surgery procedure that enhances the appearance of lips by counteracting signs of aging and making them fuller and luscious. There are various types of lip augmentation including both surgical and non-surgical.
Surgical lip augmentation gives permanent results but most of the people prefer having non-surgical lip enhancement as it is virtually painless and does not require any downtime or recovery time. Even many cosmetic surgeons prefer non-surgical lip enlargement. Here we will discuss both surgical and non-surgical options for lip augmentation.
Surgical lip augmentation:
It is the surgical procedure that involves placement of lip implants in the lips resulting in increased volume of lips. It is comparatively less invasive procedure and requires less time for recovery but still it involves incisions and has some side effects. In the procedure, small incision is made at the corners of lips to make a tunnel and then through this tunnel, lip implant is inserted in the lips. After inserting lip implant, it is trimmed to desired shape and size and then incisions are closed. Some risks are associated with this procedure including infection, implant rejection, implant migration, scarring and stiffness.
Non-surgical lip augmentation:
Non-surgical lip augmentation is minimal invasive procedure for lip enhancement and it involves using injectable fillers or fat injections. Lip fillers are synthesized using various materials and are available in several types while fat injections use your own body fat for improving the size and definition of your lips. Both fillers and fat are injected with the help of extremely tiny needles and therefore it does not cause much pain or discomfort. The only pain associated with this procedure is needle pricking.
Lip fillers: Various kinds of lip fillers are available in the market. The most commonly used types are collagen based fillers or hyaluronic acid based fillers. Collagen fillers are made from tissues extracted from cow’s skin or using human skin tissues. Collagen fillers require pre-treatment allergic test as they may cause allergic reactions. Hyaluronic acid based fillers are made of hyaluronic acid that is naturally found in the skin and keeps it smooth and supple. They are preferred on collagen fillers because they are longer lasting and do not require pre-treatment allergic test.
Fat injections: This procedure is done in two steps. The first step involves the extraction of fat from another area of body, mostly abdomen or thighs through liposuction. The extracted fat is then processed and purified fat is injected in few sites in and around the lips. This procedure is perfect option for those who don’t want to have synthesized fillers.
