How does the lip reduction procedure work?

Lip reduction is usually performed using local anesthesia. It may be an outpatient procedure meaning that it can be performed in the surgeon’s office or a surgical center. It takes about an hour to complete but may take longer if it is performed in combination with other procedures. When performing the surgery the surgeon first makes an incision along the length of your lip, usually from the inside of the mouth. Then he or she removes a strip of tissue before stitching the incision closed. This surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower lips at the same time.

What is the recovery period for lip reduction like?

Right after your lip reduction surgery is done, your lips may feel sore and contracted. Over the new couple of days you may feel moderate pain. You may be prescribed painkillers to help you with the discomfort. Some swelling and bruising are normal after lip reduction surgery. You will be provided with guidelines about when you can resume to normal activities after lip reduction surgery. Your surgeon will provide you with guidelines about when you can go back to daily activities post-surgery. Generally, you will have to refrain from vigorous exercise until your surgeon tells you it is ok. Mostly, patients are recommended to sleep with two pillows to keep the head lifted high.

What aftercare do I need to take post-surgery?

As surgeons place the incisions inside the mouth, eating may be challenging initially. You should avoid foods with high acidic content such as lemon, oranges and tomatoes and they may irritate your wounds. Soft, pureed foods may be best immediately after your lip reduction surgery. You may be prescribed an antiseptic mouthwash to rinse your mouth with to help prevent infection. If you face redness or excessive pain it may be a sign of an infection and your doctor should be contacted. Your stitches will be removed between 10 to 14 days following surgery by which time your swelling would have gone.

Lip reduction is performed under local anesthesia on outpatient basis. During the surgery, our surgeon makes an incision that runs the length of your lip inside the mouth. After this, he removes thin horizontal slice of lip fat tissue and closes the incision with sutures. The procedure can be performed on both of the lips at the same time.
You may expect having slight swelling and soreness after the surgery but you can make your recovery easy and comfortable by following surgeon’s instructions and prescriptions. You may also experience numbness that affects eating and drinking during recovery period.
Usually, surgeons use dissolvable stitches in lip reduction but in case, if non-dissolvable stitches are used, they are usually removed after 7 to 10 days.
The results begin to show in two weeks after surgery when swelling subsides. However, the final results of surgery will become apparent in nearly three to four months after surgery.
Lip reduction does not cause any serious risks when it is performed correctly and post surgical instructions are followed. However, potential risks associated with the procedure are allergic reaction to anesthesia, hematoma (collection of blood beneath skin), seroma (collection of serum) and numbness in the lips. Though it’s very rare, your lips may also become asymmetrical after surgery.
Lip reduction can be performed in any age but usually it is performed in mid or late teens or any age when patient feels he or she needs the surgery
