Lip Enlargement
Thin or wrinkled lips create a repellent look. Women and men have long been worrying how to enhance their lips to boost up their facial appeal.
Today, lip enlargement procedures are available to help them achieve overall balance for a rejuvenated facial appearance.
Lip enlargement (or lip augmentation) refers to the cosmetic procedures used by plastic and cosmetic surgeons to create fuller lips. Two commonly known procedures used to achieve this are:
- Dermal Fillers and
- Lip Implants
Achieving fuller lips through lip augmentation with cosmetic dermal fillers and lip implants are very popular these days. Lip augmentation can be performed separately or in combination with other cosmetic procedures such as facelifts, brow-lifts, rhinoplasty, and chin- or cheek-implants.
Several types of fillers and implants are available. You can discuss your preference while your surgeon is making his or her choice.
Dermal Fillers
Collagen-Based Lip Enlargement
You may choose to have a human-based collagen filler such as Cosmoderm, Cosmoplast, Cymetra, Autologen, or Fascian injected to fill the lip area. The advantage of a human-based collagen filler is that they are biocompatible and have no allegy risks which are present in bovine-based collagen such as Zyderm and Zyplast. Moreover, results that may last for four or more months.
Continued use of collagen treatments result in a gradual accumulation of the substance in the lips ensuring longevity that may last a lifetime.
Hyaluronic Acid-Based Lip Enlargement
If you are interested in a more organic and safer form of treatment for your lips, you may choose to go for a lip augmentation procedure using hyaluronic acid solution such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Belotero or Hylaform. Hyaluronic acid is responsible for maintaining hydration in the skin tissues. Hyaluronic acid fillers are considered more effective than collagen-based fillers in producing longer lasting results.
Fat Transfer Lip Enlargement
You can also choose to go for a fat transfer procedure to get suppler lips. A fat transfer procedure involves extracting fat cells from a fat-rich area of your body such as the buttocks, thighs or stomach. These fat cells are then made ready for injection into the target area such as the lips. Fat transfer in many cases provides results that are longer lasting than those achieved with fillers, though in some cases the results may be unpredictable.
Lip Implants
A lip implant procedure involves insertion of synthetic materials into the lips using a needle. To accomplish this, small incisions need to be made There is a host of implantable products available in various shapes and sizes that allows for achieving your desired results. You may also discuss your preference in the selection of the available brands.
You should exercise extreme caution in considering a lip implant as this cosmetic procedure is relatively new. Comparatively lip implants pose higher risks than other lip enlargement treatments. These include temporary bleeding and swelling at the injection site, infection, lumping, scarring, numbness, cold sores, asymmetrical lips. Sometimes, migration of the implanted material may occur which may need to be removed or repositioned with a revision procedure.
